Je suis partie un jeudi rencontrer les bénévoles de la caserne d’accueil de la Croix-Rouge de Tournai. Je voulais m’intéresser à ce qui les motivaient personnellement à donner de leur temps, à passer des journées entières à « aider tout simplement ».
Je n’ai rencontré que des personnes ayant des valeurs fortes, tout en étant bien différentes. Chacun avait sa propre histoire et très peu avaient le même profil et les mêmes origines. Pourtant, tous voulaient se rendre utiles et être efficaces. Ils voulaient et veulent faire avancer les choses aujourd’hui et pour demain.
Après une heure, ma présence devenait presque normale dans la caserne. Je me sentais déjà proche de certaines personnes et à ma place entre les bénévoles et les résidents du centre. Je prenais du plaisir à rester et je n’ai plus vu le temps passer. Je me suis alors dit que ce n’était pas seulement une caserne d’accueil qui logeait temporairement 800 migrants. De la même manière que d’autres groupements associatifs, c’était une « fabrique de liens »[1]. C’était un lieu qui recrée des liens – qu’on a perdu – de proximité. C’est aussi un lieu de rencontre où les disciplines et les publics différents se croisent, dans un esprit de réel échange culturel, culinaire, musical et religieux. Les bénévoles m’ont aussi parlé d’une envie de casser les préjugés. Ils m’ont enfin évoqué le souci personnel « d’éviter de vivre dans la surconsommation ». De manière intuitive, en me parlant de leur engagement auprès des migrants, les bénévoles m’ont parlé d’une thématique encore plus grande. Celle de redéfinir le monde dans lequel nous vivons et de revoir notre façon d’exister par rapport aux choses.
Alors j’y ai vu, à l’instar de nombreux mouvements citoyens, nés en réaction à l’ultra-libéralisme, le besoin de ces personnes bénévoles de retrouver du sens et “d’agir” en « montrant que l’on peut vivre dans un monde meilleur si chacun y met du sien »
